Be my guest, though I'm not sure how many laffs it'd get! These bureacrats (federal, state AND local) make me sick.

I'll eithermake it work, or go into it expecting dead silence, either way, thank you.

As it is Texas has a stranglehold (no offense Ted) on textbook content.

And if you think it is great to have each state decide, consider that the biggest state will decide and has been for a while.

Conversely, the climate is never going to change while a union like RIFTAP is defending ineffective practices. For instance:

"James Parisi, a field representative of the Rhode Island Federation of Teachers and Allied Health Professionals, said that Gallo had asked teachers to work a longer school day, attend after-school training and set aside two weeks in the summer for professional development. Parisi said the union balked because the district wasn’t willing to pay teachers enough for the additional time and work. "

This is bullshit on the part of the union morons. At my school, we are required to do all of the above without additional compensation, and that is just fine. We have a weekly staff meeting geared toward professional development that goes for an hour and a half after school (along with numerous committee meetings, averaging 1-2 a week), as well as training and orientation that is required during summer break. In all honesty, I can only spend so much time fishing, hiking, reading, trolling this message board etc. in the summer before I get bored. I like to work; being busy is a good thing. These fat ladies in Central Falls sure were taking an awful lot for granted. My sympathy DOES go out to people who are supporting kids on a single income, or who may lose a house because of this, etc., especially the few competent and hardworking ones. I blame the union and the ineffectual administration at that shitty high school.

yeah i made that point about the union balking at those small requests....little things a teacher should enjoy doing.

its a ballsy thing to say if you ever want to actually become a public school teacher...but the unions have become too strong. try and stand up to them and they'll ruin you. those salaries were sky high and they didnt wanna budge with extra time with messed up kids--yet somehow had the kids involved in the protests to keep them?
i agree teachers should be taken care of by being paid well, but this is kinda shady on the unions part. the superintendent wasnt asking that much of them--her last desperate act. what a mess.

I am in kind of a unique position as an employee at a Title I public charter. Basically, our pay is on par with the state prevailing wage, which some people may argue is too high. However, as a charter, we are non-union and therefore more accountable for our individual performance. Technically, we do have seniority/tenure, but we are not shielded from every reasonable administrative request by some clueless union rep who views everything in industrial-labor relations terms. I can only speak for myself, but I love my job and have a lot of enthusiasm for teaching the kids that are in my class. Every day it is a privilege to go into work. However, if someday I was burned out and no longer willing to do my job, it would certainly be time for someone to take me to task.
